R JOSE ORTIZ DE CAMARGO

Sítio Morro Grande

Espanhol, natural de Castrogeriz, província de Burgos, foi filho de Francisco de Camargo e Beatriz de La Peña.  Veio para São Paulo na armada de Dom Diogo Flores de Valdés, entre 1582 e 1583. Exerceu vários cargos públicos e desempenhou papel de relevo no confronto com povos indígenas (1590 a 1592). Prestou serviços para o governador geral Dom Francisco de Souza, participando em entradas para o sertão. Atuou contra os jesuítas em questões relacionadas ao uso de mão de obra indígena escravizada. Faleceu em 1619.
